WHY IS RED SNAPPER SUCH A POPULAR FISH TO CATCH?
Red snapper (Lutjanus campechanus) is one of the Gulf of Mexico’s signature fish.
Red Snapper Fish are extremely popular among recreational fishermen and a prized offering at restaurants and seafood markets, as well as a top predator in the Gulf ecosystem.
Here are few facts about this iconic fish:
Red snapper can grow to about 40 inches, weigh up to 50 pounds and live more than 50 years.
They begin to reproduce when they are about two years old, spawning from May to October along rocky ledges or coral reefs.
Fertilized eggs float on the surface and hatch within a day. Only a month later, the young fish settle out of the water column in shallow waters, and as they get older, they move to structured habitat where they will mature and eventually move to the deeper waters of the Gulf.
Bigger, older red snappers produce many more eggs than young ones. One 24-inch female red snapper (about 8 years old) produces as many fish as 212, 17-inch females (about 5 years old)
What other kinds of Fish do you catch?
Sheeps head-are good eating fish that are found in our bays and sounds year round.
They gather in large numbers in the pass during March and April to spawn
which makes great fishing a few weeks in the spring!
The average size is
around two pounds but can grow to over ten pounds.
Bluefish -Often found in large
schools of small fish in our area along the gulf beaches. They are voracious
feeders witch makes them a good target and a great experience for young kids.
Redfish- Are found year round in our area, primarily caught in the bays and passes on artificial reefs and like live bait. The Bulls often school in large numbers in the fall and
winter making for action packed fishing. Smaller slot fish are often found
in the shallows around docks and bridges in the summer months. Average size needed to keep is three or four pounds, which is an 18" to 27" fish but the Bulls
grow to up to 40lbs or more.
If you've never had blackened Redfish your
missing out!
Cobia -Is a popular
fish along our coast known for the large spring migration. starting in March
and running through April. These fish are targeted by sight fishing along the
beaches often in less than twenty feet of water.
Cobia are very large and hard
fighting fish that will readily take bait or lures. The average size is
around 30 lbs growing to over 100 lbs. Cobia is a favorite to eat.
Flounder
-This strange looking
flat fish can be found in the bays and along the beaches almost anywhere.
They
lay flat on the bottom and wait to ambush there pray. Bottom fishing with small
live baits is the preferred fishing method but can readily take a jig fished along
bottom as well. Most are around 2 lbs but can grow to over 10 lbs and Flounder is very good on
the plate.
Speckled Trout
These fish can be
caught year round through out our bays and sounds with the larger fish
often being caught in the spring.
The average size around 14" but can
grow as large as 10 lbs also very good eating.
Black tip Shark -We have many different
species of shark along the gulf coast but the black tip is definitely one of
the better eating ones.
